Risk assessment - use of a telehandler

Risk assessment - use of a telehandler

Telehandlers are versatile machines used for moving loads, but if the driver is over-ambitious or inattentive, accidents can occur. Use our model risk assessment to ensure that yours is used safely.

What’s covered?

The assessment identifies the following different activities associated with the use of a telehandler and then explores the hazards and precautions of each one. The activities are:

  • delivering, unloading, reloading vehicle
  • operating a telehandler - general operations
  • use of attachments
  • moving a load
  • securing loads
  • separating people and plant
  • parking and securing the machine
  • plant condition.

How to use it

The risk assessment follows our standard format with six columns. Details of how to calculate the “Risk” and “Residual risk” are detailed at the end of the form.

Each column is pre-filled with suggested content based on good practice guidance from the HSE and Construction Plant-hire Association.

The document covers the majority of common uses for a telehandler but before adopting it you must check that it deals with any specific issues created by your premises or activities. Adapt and add to it as needed before signing it off and including it within your health and safety manual. Workers must be instructed in the findings, focusing on the safe behaviours you expect of them.
