Waste hierarchy policy

Since the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 came into force, it’s become a legal requirement to follow a waste hierarchy. To ensure that this happens in your business, you should adopt a formal policy.

What’s covered?

The first part of the policy is a general statement which identifies that you know what your legal duties are and that you have appropriate systems in place to meet them. The next section reflects the requirements of the waste hierarchy and how you will follow it. It includes:

  • prevention

  • re-use

  • recycling; and

  • disposal.

The final section of the policy is a list of objectives.

Make it happen

Speak to your waste contractor. It will be in a position to help you to comply with this policy and therefore stay legal.
