Pallet racking checklist

You should inspect racking regularly for signs of damage and defects. Use our checklist to guide you through the process.

Legal position

Racking is classed as work equipment and is therefore covered by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 , which state that employers have a responsibility to ensure that it is safe to use and fit for purpose.

High-risk

Because racking can be damaged during the loading and unloading process, or by careless fork lift operators, it’s important that an individual, preferably someone such as the warehouse manager, is assigned the task of checking that it’s fit for use. They should complete regular formal checks once a month.

Periodically, a competent person should conduct a thorough check of your racking systems. Look for a member of the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA).

In addition, t hose working in the warehouse should always be on the lookout for signs of damage. You should have in place a system for the reporting and recording of racking defects.

Incidents should always be followed by a racking inspection.
